The Woolgoolga to Ballina upgrade crosses several floodplains and geologically complex regions, including the major Clarence and Richmond river systems.
The section between Glenugie and Maclean is one of those regions and is characterised by large areas of soft soils which have been undergoing settlement before major construction starts. Without soft soil treatment there is the potential for highway foundations to sink and crack as the soil has a high water content and low strength.
Bridges feature heavily between Glenugie and Maclean, with 71 bridges currently under construction. To ensure connections between communities are maintained or improved, 11 overbridges are being built at Eight Mile Lane, Old Six Mile Lane, Avenue Road, Wooli Road, Firth Heinz Road, Bostock Road, Property Access Road, Crowley’s Road, Bondi Hill Road, Byrons Lane and McIntyres Lane.
