Our story

The Pacific Highway is one of the country's most iconic roads and is the major road corridor linking Sydney and Brisbane. Since the mid 1990's, the upgrade of the highway has improved road safety, travel efficiency and regional connectivity.

An iconic journey

The journey to build one of Australia’s largest national infrastructure investments has reached an important milestone, with the final section of highway opening to traffic in December 2020.

It means the full 657 kilometres of highway between Hexham and the Queensland border is now open to traffic.

In reaching this historic moment, it is important to reflect on the fact it has been about more than just building a successful highway.

Since 1996, when the program began, it has been about building strong communities and economies, overcoming challenges, new innovations and technology, environmental sustainability and protection, improved workplace health and safety, uncovering Aboriginal and European history as well as documenting learnings to improve infrastructure building into the future. So much more than just a road.

This 25-year journey has been captured in the book, An iconic journey.

We hope you enjoy this book and the story it tells.

    Our people
“I’ve worked on upgrading the Pacific Highway for more than half of my working life and have worked on almost half of the entire 650 kilometre project. To me it's as iconic as the Snowy Mountain Hydro Scheme, I feel privileged to have been a part of it."
